Sean-Joseph Takeo Kahāokalani Choo
Sean’s art and stories offer and advocate for peace, joy, and the hope of healing found in unexpected places and unusual perspectives. He is interested in how love, especially queer love, endures.
Since committing to his own independent artistic practice in 2019, Sean-Joseph has been accepted as a Wehiwehi cohort member (2026), a part of Native Hawaiian Storytelling Program cohort two (2026), a One Year Lease International Residency participant (2025), a Lambda Literary Writers Retreat for Emerging LGBTQ Voices fellow (2024), an inaugural Native American Artist Lab playwright at The Playwrights Realm (2023), a Spring 2024 Workshop Intensive Playwright at The Workshop Theater, and a Creative Lab Hawaiʻi Playwrights Immersive Program Fellow (2021, mentor Chay Yew). He is a former Artistic Administrator, Creative Associate, and Company Actor at Honolulu Theatre for Youth.
Sean’s plays have been recognized by the Bay Area Playwrights Festival and has been an O’Neill Semi-Finalist and Finalist. His writing has been published by The Dramatist, Bamboo Ridge Press, Alon: Journal for Filipinx American and Diasporic Studies, Lambda Literary, and Übersee-Museum Bremen's collaborative exhibition project “The Blue Continent”. A letter Sean wrote was recently featured in Dr. Dustin E. Domingo’s book With Love.
He is a member of The Dramatists Guild, ASCAP, and CAATA.
He has worked with Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Kumu Kahua Theatre, Atlantic For Kids, The Studio Theatre at Tierra Del Sol, Significant Productions, and Perseverance Theatre.
