Named in honor of his grandmother, Kamamo House is a a Honolulu-based queer theater, creative refuge, and new work development māla. Sean has dubbed themself the Lead Steward + Head Jester (and sometimes Executive Artistic Director) of Kamamo House, a queer theatre, creative refuge, and new work development māla. Planted in 2019, Kamamo House is named for Sean's fierce, hapa grandmother Eloise Tsuru Kamamo Matsuno Choo.
I imagine Gramma saying 'ah, gunfunit'!
A hybridized bromeliad, named after Gramma Eloise, created by Uncle David Shiigi at Bromeliads Hawaii.
Every summer, we would go with Gramma to Hilo to visit Uncle David and spend time on his farm. Building pilina with Moku o Keawe and nature, experiencing both the rigor and peace that being in relationship with ʻāina brings, and watching how Gramma would interact with her favorite cousin, Aunty Bella, all inform Kamamo House's 'MĀLA mindfulnes' philosophy and methodology of creative cultivation.
I strive to nurture Kamamo House with an emphasis on plant-inspired rhythms of process (slow growth), consent-based practices, and a kanaka ʻōiwi perspective to what we call 'production' and performance, bringing over three decades of experience in the performing arts into my practice.
Kamamo House is dedicated to cultivating creative refuges — with special attention to MVPFAFF+ and 2SLGBTQIA+ artists — where they can be fully supported in the development of their work, fed and watered by kamāʻaina and kānaka maoli of Hawaiʻi.
Sean semi-regularly hosts works-in-progress gatherings of multidisciplinary new work, as well as playreadings.
